How did lighthouse keepers get on and off the lighthouses? How do they survive the pounding by the sea? How did they build lighthouses 100 or more years ago? Many lighthouses are built out at sea on top of rocks with nothing else around. Luckily, the lighthouse keeper did step inside and was not swept away by the wave but it is a very striking image. It was taken in 1989 at La Juent lighthouse in France, and has sold over 1m copies in poster format. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, I was able to look up the background to this famous photo. I have often looked at that photograph and wondered what happened to the lighthouse keeper. What is unusual about this picture is that it was taken from the air, and there is a lighthouse keeper standing at an open door at the base of the lighthouse, moments from the wave completely surrounding it. After all, lighthouses are placed to warn sailors of dangerous rocks and if there are big seas, they are going to be hit by waves. There is a stormy sea in the background and a wave is curling around the lighthouse. I received it as a present a number of years ago. I have a large scale photograph of a lighthouse. I suppose I have been fascinated with lighthouses ever since. But I seem to remember the Famous Five going on a holiday to a lighthouse and having one of their usual adventures. I don’t remember where in the UK it was supposed to be set. I don’t remember anything about the plot of the book.
